Google Groups Posts - Mon, 07/19/2010 - 18:18
Hi all,

We're a non-profit organization that works on economic fairness and
consumer protection issues. Our issue areas include reining in
predatory lending, advocating for foreclosure reforms, and helping
consumers avoid the financial tricks and traps of the financial
industry.

We're looking for help (or direction) on developing a mobile app that

Re: Mobile Developer Referrals

I've been getting some email responses, thank you!

I'm planning on coming to the PIE meetup this month so I can meet some
of you there.

I would love to hear from more developers on our project so I can get
a more rounded out idea of who to go with. I would love the opinions
of the members here ;)

Mobile Developer Referrals

Google Groups Posts - Mon, 07/19/2010 - 18:18
Hi guys,

I'm new to this group, but I've been reading a lot!

I need to find a Portland developer that I can get a bid from to build
an app for iPhone, Android, etc.

I'm hoping that someone can refer me to a company that can work with
us! We have funding and a great idea, so we're not looking for a

Upcoming events?

Google Groups Posts - Mon, 07/19/2010 - 18:18
Hi folks. I just joined the Mobile Portland group. I developed an
iPhone app called Twang, which debuted a few weeks ago, and has been
fairly successful. (0:45 video clip: [link])

Are there any Mobile Portland events coming up? I'd love to meet other
people in the industry. Thanks --

All these iPhone / iPad jobs. Wish I had been learning this while I was busy
doing my work with J2EE. I would love to not just be learning, but rather be
at the point where I could take a job like this. :(

iPhone Developer Opening at Handmark

Google Groups Posts - Mon, 07/19/2010 - 18:18
As an employee of Handmark, I can very highly recommend working for them. If
you're a rockstar who's looking for full time iPhone / iPad development
work, then now's your chance to work for them too. Quoted job ad:
*Handmark has an immediate opening in its Portland, Oregon office for a
Software Engineer on our iPad / iPhone Development team. This position will

_You_ may, but the success of Geek Squad's home theater installation service (and a long list of similar services) says that most consumers are happy to spend a bit extra or have their retailer choice swayed based on not having to. Remember, it's all about opportunity cost. Most people aren't interested in spending the attention required to make your new gadget work for them. That's why consumer apps are an entirely different field than line of business apps.

Mobspot launches Facebook app

Hi All,
Just wanted to pass on the launch news of Mobspot's Facebook
application. The app will work on your desktop / laptop computer where
we'll check out your iTunes library completely securely, allow you to
rate your apps, then see which iPhone apps your friends on Facebook
like. It's a really cool experience and we think it provides immediate

I agree, actually. I'm the first person to say that computers and technology
in general aren't user friendly enough yet and that we can do better as
programmers and engineers. However, I also believe that once you dive into a
technology you kind of take on the burden of learning a bit. Just as I
wouldn't expect someone to hand-hold me through setting up a 5.1 surround

I'll try calibrating it. Either myself or by taking it to the Genius bar. It could just be I'm not used to it.
I read this thread and got concerned, though.

Seemed like some people who have been at this far longer than me were having a problem so I wanted to sample a group I assumed had Macs and make sure they were doing okay with heavy MacBook use as that's what I'm going to be using as I dive deeper into iPhone development and work on my startup.

I'll try calibration and I'll hook it up to an external monitor later today
(as I planned on doing anyway).
Thanks. Mostly I wanted to see if there were other people that had the
difficulty I did as, given that I'm learning iPhone dev in part to pick up
new skills while I'm unemployed, a MacBook is an investment, but an

That reminds me that if you haven't done so already, you should go into the display preferences and calibrate your display. It will allow you to adjust gamma and other settings.
Your display may still be messed up as Elia suggests, but if you haven't tried calibration yet, it is worth a try.

At least in the past Macs' used a lower gamma setting than Windows machines. I thought they just changed that though. Does your MacBook have the latest OS?

I have a 13" MacBook Pro that straps perfectly to the back of my bike. Display seems fine to me. Is your MacBook different than others? Maybe there actually is something wrong with the display? Shouldn't look different than the ones in the store.
