@Elia: I agree. Every company wants to control their own future.
Reality is, however, that there are laws against how protective you
can be. I have no doubt that Apple will be around for decades to come.

Re: {Mobile Portland} Question about PhoneGap
I am a bit surprised that it appears you still need the JDK. For some reason
I thought there was a way to setup a mobile.mydomain.com that could still
touch the API of the camera. Not sure why I thought that as it breaks the
whole same origin site principle, but I thought I'd heard that at some
point. Oh well.

Re: {Mobile Portland} Question about PhoneGap
Nevermind. I'd followed their instructions earlier and it hadn't worked. I
just tried it again and it did. Go figure.
Thanks. I'll play around with Android camera stuff later.

Re: {Mobile Portland} Question about PhoneGap
It's been a while since I played with PG, but I'm pretty sure the
empty directories are a feature of Git. It's like SVN externals, but
you have to bootstrap them yourself to pull down the content. I'm
pretty sure the README has some info.
Again it's been a long time since I tried to play with it and didn't

Re: {Mobile Portland} Question about PhoneGap
I have no experience with phonegap, but I'd guess that the iphone and
android tags at the top-right indicate the platforms the function is
supported on?

Re: {Mobile Portland} Question about PhoneGap
Sorry. I missed that. :-)
I'm not sure on Android camera. @brianleroux has a Google Spreadsheet that shows compatibility across devices. I have to run to a meeting, but if you can't track down the info, let me know and I'll see what I can find out later in the day.

Re: {Mobile Portland} Question about PhoneGap
Thanks. The big picture question I was referring to, though, was whether
this works across both Android and iPhone. I was looking at the wiki and it
seemed to indicate that it only worked for iPhone. I'll try it out once I
can get an actual download of phonegap and not an empty git repository.

Question about PhoneGap
Figured I'd ask here first instead of the source, because someone here might
have used this recently. I downloaded PhoneGap to give it a try and the git
directory is empty. There is nothing in the iPhone, Android, etc.

Also, I wanted to ask a high level question. Does PhoneGap give you access

crazy talk
All this stuff is so new. The paint isn't dry on anyone's device, software
or business arrangement. Outside, in the rest of the world, most people
have phones that... make phone calls and not much else.
Everything we think we and other people know about these devices, how they
are used and what people are willing to pay for, could be completely wrong.

Your technical myopism is showing as you assume that Apple doesn't
change their business strategy every couple of months. Currently, the
have a 3-legged strategy. The ipod and iphone is just one of the legs.
Stop trying to make the future this free place. The market is driven
by money. If you idea doesn't make money then why would they use it?

You've made your point, clearly, Mounir, but I wanted to make one more
comment for all involved here on this topic: the fallicy that the only
way to write software for a device is to put it on the device itself
is frustrating.
There are two ways of writing mobile software today. One is to write
an app that runs on the device. I would argue that writing apps that

Alright, I'll just add an event to my Google Calendar for 10 years from now.
We can come back to this then.

The app store is EVERYTHING for Apple's app strategy. It is the bridge
every developer has to get permission to cross to get on the device.
And Apple, the gate keeper, can deny you for any reason (

You are missing one crucial point. The 2020 you're describing is going

One assumption you seem to be making is that the app store is a significant
part of Apple's business model or strategy. Apple is a hardware company.
If you look at a chart of Apple's revenue by business unit, the app store
is a smudge at the bottom-right corner.
In 10 years every app will have moved into the cloud. We'll have 5G

I have a friend that is super conservative and I'm very liberal. Our
political talks get very heated, but never crosses over to personal
attacks. At the end of the discussion we're buddies again. That's how
discussions should be. Get your point out, don't do personal attack on
someone just because they don't agree with you, and when it's over, it

Re: {Mobile Portland} Fixing Palm
The other day I played with an Archos 5 Android tablet thing, and found it
has no hardware buttons at all, save for power.
Took me 2 minutes to get to the homescreen to verify that it is indeed
Android. A hardware button may not be that silly a thing if it makes all the
difference.
I was reading a good interview with Jon Rubinstein, CEO of Palm, by Fortune

Fixing Palm
I was reading a good interview with Jon Rubinstein, CEO of Palm, by Fortune Magazine and for some reason started flipping through the comments. Here was my favorite:
"I have a Pre and I am rooting for Palm but here is what they need to fix: 1. Add a hardware back key."
I laughed so hard I almost fell out of my seat and thought all of you would appreciate this. That's right, Palm. Add a hardware back button, a la blackBerry, and all your problems will be solved!

Yes, and no...
There's an intermediate step between cloud and native. Apps for mobile
devices have the opportunity to take advantage of "local
intelligence" (think device peripherals). I'm fully convinced that
tomorrow's apps will be cloud based. But cloud based apps are very
limited today. Browser's don't allow much access to local data.
